Spring School Holidays in Sydney: Sort Your Nanny Before the September Rush
Here's a date worth circling: Term 3 finishes on Friday 25 September. And here's the one that catches parents out — students don't go back until Tuesday 13 October. That's more than two full weeks of school holidays, with a Labour Day long weekend tucked in the middle.
If both parents work, two-plus weeks is a long time to cover with annual leave and goodwill. So this is your friendly early reminder: the families who sort their school-holiday care in September are the ones who get their pick of days — and of carers.
The spring holiday maths
The break runs Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October, plus the Monday 12th before school resumes on the Tuesday. For most working families that's ten-plus weekdays to plan for. The usual pieces of the puzzle:
Annual leave. Lovely if you can take it — spring in Sydney is glorious. But few parents can take two weeks every holidays, four times a year.
Grandparents and family. Wonderful for some days, a big ask for a fortnight.
Holiday camps and vacation care. Great for sporty, social kids — though spots fill early, drop-offs still need doing, and a full camp week can tire little ones out.
A school-holiday nanny. One familiar person, your home, your routine — covering the days the rest of the puzzle doesn't.
Most families land on a mix. The trick is deciding the mix before the last week of term.
What a school-holiday nanny actually does
Holiday care is the fun end of nannying, and the nannies on our books genuinely love it:
Days built around your children — park mornings, beach afternoons, backyard cricket, craft on the rainy days
Outings to the places kids actually rate (we wrote a whole guide to Sydney's best playgrounds by area)
Lunches made, water bottles filled, sunscreen actually applied
Home by rest time, so the afternoon doesn't fall apart
You can book full days or part days, one week or both — whatever shape your holidays take. And if you have a mix of school-age and littlies at home, one nanny can cover the lot, which is where in-home care quietly beats running two drop-offs.
Why booking early matters (a note from a small agency)
We're a boutique agency, and we match every family personally — which means we'd always rather hear from you in September than at 8pm on the Sunday before the holidays. Early bookings get first pick of days and the best match for your children. Late ones get whatever's honestly left, and sometimes the honest answer is a waitlist.
Every Nanny Nest carer is carefully chosen: NSW Working With Children Check, National Police Check, current First Aid and CPR, and references we've personally spoken to. That screening takes time — another reason early beats late.
A simple way to plan it this week
Grab the calendar and mark 28 September to 13 October
Colour in the days already covered — leave, family, camps
Count what's left. That's your nanny-days number
Send it to us — days, ages, suburb — and we'll suggest the right carer
If you're also thinking past the holidays, an after-school nanny often grows out of a great holiday booking — same person, familiar face, term-time hours.
Spring is the nice-weather holidays — enjoy them
The best version of these two weeks is the one where the kids are outdoors having a wonderful time, and you're not doing conference calls from a trampoline park.
Start your nanny search with your holiday dates — days, ages and suburb — and we'll come back to you with the right carer.
Twenty-eight days until the bell rings. The well-organised parents are booking now.
