The Best Playgrounds in Sydney: A Family Favourites Guide by Area

Few things make a child happier than a brilliant playground — and Sydney has some absolute crackers. Whether you're filling a school-holiday morning, wearing out the kids before nap time, or just chasing a good coffee while they climb, here are some of the city's best, sorted by area so there's always one near you.

Grab a water bottle, a hat and a spare change of clothes (there's always a puddle), and off you go.

Eastern Suburbs

Inglis Park, Randwick — home of that twirly slide. The towering helter-skelter slide is the star, and it even lights up at night. A genuine destination playground that big kids adore.

Maroubra Beach playground — a fenced, nautical-themed space right by the sand, with two big ship structures, rope rigging and timber play. Perfect for littlies, with a skate park nearby for older siblings and the beach right there.

Centennial Parklands — not one playground but several, set in glorious parkland made for bikes, scooters, kite-flying and picnics. An easy half-day on its own.

Inner West

Sydney Park, St Peters — a huge green space with climbing structures, slides, swings and a sand area, plus wetlands, boardwalks and open fields for running and bike-riding. Loads of room to roam.

Charles Heath Reserve, Five Dock — an Inner West favourite, packed with play towers, swirly slides, musical instruments, nature-play spots and mega climbing ropes. Something for every age.

North Shore

St Ives Showground playground — widely considered the North Shore's best adventure playground, and thoughtfully designed to be inclusive for all ages and abilities, from toddlers up to 11- and 12-year-olds, with lovely nature-play areas.

Clifton Gardens Reserve, Mosman — modern seesaws, soaring swings, imaginative climbing and a dedicated toddler zone, all with shade, harbour views and a café close by for the grown-ups. A dreamy day out.

Northern Beaches

Flying Fox Park, Mona Vale — sprawling equipment, flying foxes, a bike path, picnic tables and a café within reach, all within Winnererremy Bay Reserve. An easy full-day spot.

Bilarong Reserve, Narrabeen — a state-of-the-art playground on the edge of Narrabeen Lagoon, with an adventure trail, climbing nets, a shaded junior area, BBQs and water access.

Rocket Ship Park, Warriewood — kids scale the towering rocket and zoom down the tunnel slide, with hill slides, a basket swing, climbing challenges and a separate toddler area.

Collaroy Beach playground — fully fenced and designed with inclusivity in mind, with accessible swings, sensory play and soft-fall surfaces, plus cafés and a rock pool right next door.

A few tips for a great playground day

  • Go early or late in summer — midday equipment gets hot, and shade is your friend. In winter, late morning catches the best sun.

  • Fenced playgrounds are gold with toddlers and multiple children — one less thing to watch.

  • Pack the basics — water, hats, sunscreen, snacks and wipes. A picnic rug turns a quick stop into a lovely morning.

  • Let them lead. Some of the best play happens when kids are simply given time and space to explore.

Playground days, sorted

A great nanny knows that a morning at the playground is worth its weight in gold — fresh air, big sleeps, happy kids. If your family could use a hand with the school run, the holidays, or those busy weekdays, we'd love to help.

We place carefully chosen nannies with families right across Sydney — from the Eastern Suburbs and Inner West to the North Shore and Northern Beaches. If the school holidays are on your mind, our school holiday nanny guide is a good place to start.
