Nanny, Babysitter or Au Pair: What's the Difference?

The words nanny, babysitter and au pair get used almost interchangeably, but they describe quite different kinds of childcare. Here is what each one actually means in Australia in 2026.

At a glance

A nanny is a professional carer hired regularly, usually long-term, often with formal qualifications. A babysitter is occasional, usually evenings or weekends, and rarely a long-term arrangement. An au pair is typically a young person from overseas who lives with you and helps with the children in exchange for room, board and pocket money.

Nanny

Nannies work on a set schedule, take a real interest in your child's development, and often help with related tasks like school runs, laundry for the children, and preparing their meals. Many have an early childhood Certificate III or Diploma. They are paid by the hour with super, leave and tax handled like any employee.

Babysitter

Babysitters are great for date nights, occasional appointments, or a few hours of cover. Rates in Sydney typically sit at $25 to $40 an hour. There is less expectation of long-term routine or developmental focus, and the arrangement is usually informal.

Au pair

Au pairs live in your home, usually for three to twelve months, and provide around 25 to 35 hours of childcare a week in exchange for accommodation, meals and pocket money (typically $200 to $300 per week). It is a cultural exchange as much as a job, and works best for families with school-aged children and a spare room.

Which is right for you?

Choose a nanny if you need regular weekday care and want professional continuity. Choose a babysitter for occasional cover. Consider an au pair if you have the space, want a more relaxed and affordable option, and your children are older.
